Clearspring Review: November 2016
18 food awards have been achieved by Clearspring since 2010! They are an ethical brand that supports sustainable organic farming which benefits local communities. 10 different nationalities make up the Clearspring team and between them 8 different languages are spoken; English, French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Italian and Portuguese – What better cultural foodie knowledge base could you ask for!
Summer sun long gone, as the winter weather sets in it can be tempting to wrap up warm and over indulge in naughty treats. A treat or two is nice, but sigh…moderation is key and maintaining inner health is important. My philosophy is “Eat well, feel well, look well”. Help is on hand, as the Clearspring team export organic foods made with fine quality ingredients to 43 countries. One of which is the UK where I recently had the opportunity to sample some of these yummy products.
The Organic Apricot Fruit spread with no added sugar, artificial colourings or preservatives and made with more than 50% fruit was sensational. Delivering a palatal fruity flavoursome freshness that tantalised my taste buds. Say bye to artificial gelling catalyst calcium citrate used in many jams, as sea vegetable powder is used in this spread as a natural option. Why call it a “spread”? The term Jam is strictly governed by law and the requirement is to have a minimum overall sugar content, so when fruit juice is used as an ingredient, instead of sugar, the overall sugar content (and the calories) are reduced. The choice is clear…Clearspring.
The low in sugar Bio Kitchen Organic Smooth Peanut Butter has not been homogenised meaning it does not contain hydrogenated palm oil or other cheaper vegetable oils. An instant household hit, so much so the jar was in and out of the kitchen cupboard more times than the salt and pepper grinders! I urge you to buy more than one jar, because with this peanut perfection blink and it will be gone!
Gluten free, a great source of fibre and contain less than 5% fat the Organic Puffed Corn Cakes make marvellous low fat snacks or as a bread free option. Importantly, the scrummy light and crispy corn cakes are made in Belgium with GM-free corn grown in Italy, and seasoned with just 0.3% Atlantic Sea Salt, unrefined to ensure that all its healthful mineral properties are retained.
Wheat-free, dairy-free and no-added-sugar the Organic Sun-dried Tomato and Herb Oatcakes were lip-smacking yumminess. Baked with heart, soul and love by fourth generation craft bakers in the Scottish highlands and I can say the love was shared by my guests at a recent couples get together at my home. Roughly chopped tomatoes and a splash of olive oil created cute mini mouth-watering bruschetta style oat cake nibbles, served alongside a glass of lush wine equalled extremely happy guests.
Produced in the UK with organic whole soya beans using hand-crafted Japanese methods only means one thing – the 150ml Organic Soya Sauce Dispenser. Soy sauce smiles all round. An obvious partnership to team up with the egg free Organic Japanese Skinny Soba Somen Noodles. Quick, easy and versatile words will not do these noodles justice. Providing a source of protein, fibre and low in fat. These should simply be called “Special” noodles…why? No forced extrusion, these noodles are authentically made by Artisan family producers using the roll and cut method. Slowly air dried at low temperatures, ranging from 28 – 48 degrees rather than artificially dried at 60-80 degrees, to concentrate their flavour. Try them for yourself for a delicious, delightful dip into Japanese cuisine.
