Thaikhun Manchester Vegetarian Foodie Visit: March 2017

Bangkok o’clock and I was back in my fav Thailand paradise right in the heart of Manchester city centre – Thaikhun Spinningfields. Backpack loaded up, I was ready to explore and take a journey back to the bustling Bangkok street markets, but this time to sample all things vegetarian.

As always, a Thai style welcome awaited, warmth, happiness and plenty of smiles from the Thaikhun team, such a great start to the evening. Gabby our main server was great and offered us effortless, unpretentious service with a smile. Knowledgeable about the menu offerings, Gabby guided us through the menu with ease. Settled in, it was time to ‘tuk tuk’ into some of Thaikhun’s temptingly delicious vegetarian food offerings.

Usually the start of September in Thailand means one thing, the market treat of Tod man khao pod, start to appear. These sweetcorn cakes are flavoured with rich red curry paste and amazing aromatic kaffir lime leaves, served alongside a yummy sweet chilli dipping sauce. These traditional market treats are made in their masses by the vendors and I can see why – deliciously tasty! Por pia sod tofu – Fresh tofu rolls were fresh, fragrant crispy, crunchy and every bite was enjoyed. Ka nom jeem – The dumplings stuffed with steamed vegetables and served with a super scrummy soya sauce were a hit. The legendary and delicious mouth-watering main – Massaman with tofu, was a curry served with potatoes, onions, cashew nuts and flavoured with star anise and cinnamon. Served up with some lovely fragrant jasmine rice. Phan Thai – Rice noodles stir fried with tofu, egg, bean sprouts, spring onions, carrots in a lip-smacking sweet & sour tamarind sauce was delightful.

Sweet offerings included the brilliant banana fritters with vanilla ice cream, that offered a good textual mix and were packed with flavour. The gluten free chocolate tart with an amazing almond base and lashings of chocolate cream was divine. Personally, I recommend adding on an expresso with your dessert, as this is made using the amazing Doi Chaang coffee from the Chaing Rai province of Northern Thailand! Another sweet offering was the lovely Thaikhun team member Carolina, who took time out with us and other diners to chat, while she worked, which created an atmospheric buzz about the place.

The goodbye was just as warm as the welcome, The Good Time Girl cocktail, a mix of vanilla vodka & butterscotch schnapps blended with passion fruit liqueur and pineapple juice kept me fuelled up Thai style, as I boarded my ‘Tuk tuk’ going to destination home, while securely holding on tightly to my seat and obviously my return Thaikhun ticket!
