Turtle Bay Blackburn Review: April 2017
Trinidad to Tobago, Bahamas to Blackburn’s Turtle Bay where you can sample your very own heat of the Caribbean without having to pack your suitcase and minus the airfare. Welcomed by our server, aka Jamaica’s Jamming Jordan, I knew this visit was going to be hot! Décor colourful, inviting with beach wood style tables and even shack style toilets. Jamming reggae music playing the likes of the classic Bob Marley. The mix of décor, music, happy vibes and atmosphere got me in the summer mood, so the shades went on and it was time to taste some creative cocktails – Caribbean style.
The Koko Colada, combines Koko Kanu white rum, pineapple, coconut & cream and is topped off with nutmeg to create a creamy light lush paradise. Perfect to pair up with the contrasting Passion Rum Punch a mix up of delish Dar Rum & Passoa, fresh passion fruit, orange juice and lemon creating a mouth-watering mix that packs a palatal punch. The crazy Caribbean Pimms, throws together Pimms, fresh mint, strawberries, cucumber, lime, ginger, orange and passion fruit to create the original summer breeze. Can’t take the heat, well the Rum runner, freezes up a blend of dark rum, blackberry and banana liqueurs, lemon and grenadine, that cools you down while still sipping on delicious Jamaican flavours.
Chilling and Jamming in the relaxed atmosphere, it was time for some much-needed food. Jordan guided us through the menu, with his expert knowledge, confident and not arrogant, where he adopted a natural friendly approachable style which to me is the ethos of this entire brand and the Caribbean way. Sensational starters included the Duck Roll, stuffed with slow roasted shredded duck, onion, soy sauce, chilli & sugar cane served with a sour orange chutney…roll on the good times! The brilliant Beach Food platter did it for me, offering a selection of spicy jerk chicken wings, tasty pepper roti, lush sweet corn fritters & yummy garlic n herb flatbreads.
The Mains included the gorgeous Goats Cheese and fresh mango flatbread all rocked up with fresh tomato, sweet onion chutney, rocket and hot sauce. The impressive Goat Burger made with Goat meat and balanced with a little lamb was grilled and seasoned in jerk spices and packed with flavour, served on a sweet bun with fresh green seasoning sweet onion chutney and super sweet plantain. Jamming to the Reggae, I could not forget to add on the legendary Rice & peas and sweet potato fries.
Delicious desserts included the delightful dark chocolate brownie pie served warm with vanilla ice cream. The amazing Caymanas Rum cake, made with warm golden mellow rum was topped off with a splash of caramel and vanilla ice cream – just sensational. Just as we thought our day could not get any brighter, the Manager, Super Susie came on over to our island and took time out of her busy day to give us the down low on the brand, alongside a fantastic rum board which featured 4 amazing rums along with a can of ting. Clearly knowledgeable, Susie explained the heritage and a few key facts about the rum, which really added that extra sparkle to the day
Susie, a fantastic manager with energy, enthusiasm, spark, first class leadership abilities and a passion for the brand, product, customers and importantly her employees. A team clearly inspired, with the likes of Jordan jamming with the customers, giving them a true taste of Jamaican hospitality and representing the brand well. The food, cocktails and rum board offered excellent value for money in an authentic relaxed setting with music that gets you in the Caribbean mood.
One Love, one Heart! Let’s get together at Turtle Bay Blackburn and feel all right. You will have an amazing Caribbean time.
