Beech Hill Hotel and Spa Windermere Review: October 2017
The Beech Hill Hotel and spa located in an enviable postcode in the heart of Lake Windermere sets the scene for an exquisite atmospheric Cumbrian countryside break. The hotel has evolved over time, with the renovations being sympathetic to the original building to retain both its character and charm.
Warmly welcomed by The Beech Hill Hotel team and shown to our room which was fully appointed with two double beds, a spacious dining area, a snug sofa, a dressing table, a quality hairdryer, a generous tea tray, guest information and Lakes brochure guides, that were cram packed with ideas and suggestions of fun activities. The hotel is no more than a ten minute drive to Bowness-on-Windermere, a town which is a hive of activity with attractions such as the Beatrix Potter Tea Rooms, Quaint English pubs and boat tours from the banks of Lake Windermere.
The en-suite shower room was both clean and classic in style with a marvellous mirror stocked with an abundance of useful toiletries. I have stayed in many hotel rooms and one thing the Beech Hill Hotel has done well is the abundance of mirrors, plugs, towels and clothes hangers provided which makes for a relaxed streamlined stay.
The Patio doors lead onto a private balcony and from the eastern bank of Windermere, the dramatic views across the lake to the Western Fells literally take your breath away. A moment where one can take time to relax, reflect and simply enjoy nature at its purest.
The lovely Lakeview Spa is a tranquil oasis of calm, that provides escape from life’s hustle and bustle, which offers an impressive 40ft indoor pool with lazing loungers to simply kick back, relax and have a little you time.
The opulent outdoor vitality spa pool in the scented garden, has an eloquent picture postcard backdrop with lake Windermere views, to ensure a peaceful ambiance and calm.
Other features include a state of the art Himalayan Sauna, an aromatic Steam Room and changing facilities.
The Award-winning Burlington’s Restaurant, that has held AA rosettes for the last 20 years, highlights both their commitment and passion to producing fine quality cuisine, taking culinary inspiration from the local area and where possible locally sourcing their ingredients. Polish Head Chef Lukasz Zebryk, who has worked in various Award Winning restaurants in North Yorkshire, Cumbria and the surrounding areas, is inspired by his love for modern cuisine.
Bread, butter and a balsamic oil dipping dish was served while we awaited our sensational starters which included the vegetarian Crispy Goats Cheese and fresh sage risotto cake with smoked celery cream and the Crispy roast lamb breast with cucumber noodles, radish and tzasiki. Both beautifully presented and tasted divine.
Mouth-watering mains comprised of the vegetarian fabulous fresh English Petit Pois and mint risotto with parmesan and extra virgin olive oil and the Crispy Duck Confit with cabbage, smoked bacon and fondant potato and a marmalade glaze celery puree. We both opted for the delightful dessert; Chocolate Brownie with vanilla bean ice cream. Johnny and all the team did an exceptional job at ensuring all our needs were met which made for an unforgettable dining experience.
After Dinner drinks can be enjoyed in the comfortable and plush surroundings of the Griffin Bar, named after A. Harry Griffin who provided much joy to many, with his writings about the English Lakeland. Offering exceptional views across the lake over to the Langdale Fells and Old Man of Coniston.
There was an extensive wine and cocktail list, so we enjoyed a glass of Las Pampas Malbec, from Mendoza Argentina and an expresso Martini, while we played board games in comfort beside the log fire. Max the night porter is an asset to the business and provided some welcomed light conversation that added to the hotels quaint charm.
After a pleasant sleep it was time to refuel and indulge with a brilliant Burlingtons breakfast. The oak panelled plush restaurant has some romantic window view seating which makes for an extra special leisurely breakfast occasion with a view. The plentiful continental breakfast offerings included fresh juices, fruit salad, melon, segmented red grapefruit, apples, natural yogurt, jam, pastries, muffins, cheese and ham.
However, if you do not fancy getting fruity why not opt for the hot full English breakfast or have a slice of toast alongside a fresh cup of English tea. The break was idyllic, and the general manager Mr Johnathan Allan sums up the ethos well,
“The Beech Hill Hotel is all about taking time out, about relaxing, about feeling you really are away from it all.”
Thank you for reading 😊

I always base my hotel stays on two things: the state of the indoor pool, and the food near by. I have never stayed at a spa before!
