The Mount Royale Hotel & Spa York #Review

The Mount Royale Hotel & Spa York – Review:January 2019

The Mount Royale Hotel & Spa is located a short stroll from the beautiful historic city of York.

The Mount Royale Hotel & Spa is situated at the top of The Mount, hence the name.  Founded by Richard and Christine Oxtoby in 1967, the hotel was formerly two private houses built during the reign of William IV (1830 – 1837).

The hotel has a country house feel, a home away from home vibe, which offers guests a relaxing place to kick back and chill.  This is reflected also in the service, a friendly and professional approach all-round.

The lovely Garden Suite rooms provide a cosy space to get away from all the hustle and bustle along with a veranda, so you can enjoy the gorgeous greenery.

Offering full en-suite facilities, with complimentary plush bathroom toiletries, fully appointed tea tray with biscuits and a generous supply of Harrogate water.

The beautiful surrounding mature gardens, something not often associated with an inner-city hotel, are muchly welcomed.

The hotel’s onsite Oxo’s Restaurant, the perfect place for a bite to eat, provides a lovely lounge area for a pre or post evening drink and perhaps a game of oxo, dominos or drafts.

Oxo’s managed by the wonderful warm and welcoming Julian and his adorable team was an absolute delight from start to finish.

The mouth-watering menu, where possible, uses quality locally sourced British ingredients to create innovative and interesting dishes.

Sensational starters included the crispy goats cheese and heirloom tomatoes with san marzano tomato sorbet, pesto, nasturtium leaf salad.  Also, the super seared king scallops with celeriac puree, granny smith apple, pickled walnuts, sauternes dressing.

Marvellous mains included the vegetarian Yorkshire blue cheese pithiver packed with roasted beetroot, sprouting broccoli, smoked almonds, truffle honey.  My plus one had the rump of English lamb, served up with dauphinoise potatoes, fine beans, red wine baby onions, butternut squash, spinach redcurrant & rosemary jus.

Delicious desserts came in the form of the brilliant black forest gateau with griotinne cherry ripple cremeux, chocolate souffletine.

The orange marmalade & nutmeg brioche butter pudding with crème anglaise, vanilla bean ice cream and happened to be my personal fav! After dinner, settle into the snug hub, at the hotel bar with an old stone work roaring fire, a quirky electic mix of bits and bobs, all adding to the charm, character and atmospheric calmness about the place.

Wake up bright and with a bounce in your step and head into the hotels breakfast room.  The bountiful buffet offers guests a range of cereals, juices, fresh fruit, yogurts and pastries.

Alternatively, go for the hotels hot Yorkshire breakfast which caters for both vegetarian and meat eaters alike.

The Mount Royale hotel, a warm and friendly hub, the perfect place for a York city getaway.

  2. I love how warm and cosy the room looks, I would quite easily relax very quickly with the soft lighting and huge bed. The desserts you mention like the chocosouffletine would be something I would be eager to try.
