Explore Picturesque Pendle with the Pendle Inn at Barley Review: September 2019
Located in the beautiful Forest of Bowland, Pendle is not only known for once being the home of the Pendle witches, but also has a well-connected and established walking territory with connections on the Bronte way.
The Pendle Inn at Barley is the perfect place for you to enjoy the outdoors and see all what the Forest of Bowland and the surrounding areas has to offer.
Pendle Inn is based in the heart of the village of beautiful Barley with the iconic and distinctive Pendle hill practically on their doorstep.
The Inn is cosy with real wood log fire and ideal for a drink, as they are famous in the local area for their 6 cask ales, as they use local breweries like Moorhouses, Marstons and some Micro brands.
Where to Stay
Get cosy in style and why not stay at the Pendle Inn to make the most of your time, as there is so much to see and do in the area you are spoilt for choice.
The rooms at the Inn are set in a spacious annex just a few meters from the pub itself with onsite parking.
Accommodations are split on two levels providing a super snug king on the first floor, private bathroom, lounge and a mini kitchen too.
Where to Eat
Your foodie palettes can also be satisfied at the Pendle Inn, as they serve food and drinks daily from 12pm.
There is something to suit everyone, the starters of black pudding, goats cheese salad and the brilliant breadboard with hummus, balsamic oil, pesto and olives.
Mains included the fabulous fish & chips, Panang vegetable curry with thai salad and a huge trophy of fries.
Desserts included the lovely brownie sundae scoffed in record time along with tea and coffee.
Sundays have just become super at the Pendle Inn at Barley, with their brilliant Sunday lunch offerings, a must try while you are in the area.
The goats cheese butternut squash roast along with all the trimmings was seriously scrummy and my plus one loved the roast beef Sunday lunch. Desserts of sticky toffee pudding and crumble with custard are delicious.
Breakfast is not served onsite, but you have all the self-catering facilities you need in your annex.
Including kettle, toaster, microwave, solid expandable table and complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits.
Also, the village offer an honesty box system where you can buy local eggs, so breakfast can begin with farm fresh eggs on toast and a fresh cup of tea.
Things to do
Pendle Hill
Pendle Hill is famously linked with the 1612 witch trials, but now the hill has a much more pleasant overtone.
A magnificent sight, at over 557 metres above sea level, the hill is worth the hike, as your efforts will be rewarded with views overlooking lovely Lancashire countryside.
The views on a beautiful day can go on for miles, we even had the pleasure of watching the para-gliders, as they took on the Lancashire skies.
Once on top, aim for the white trig point, often the meeting point at the top of this amazing hill.
These white pillars were once used by OS Ordnance Survey to map Britain and the triangulation point is still a focal point for many walkers.
Even on a moodier day, Pendle is still a mysterious and magical place, as you can see.
Recently, they have also installed some stone slabs , around the trig, including images such as the constellations, hand prints and many other exciting images.
Pendle Hill in the Dark
For the more experience hill walkers and climbers why not get up early and experience Pendle in the dark.
Grab your head torches, pop on the hiking gear and make your way through witch country just like Pendle residents did years past.
See the sensational sunset rise in the most beautiful way.
Pendle Sculpture Trail
The walk to the sculpture is a beautiful sight, as you can take in the sights at the Black Moss reservoir.
Once you arrive make your way into the Aitken woods and this is the start of your wonderful woodland adventure.
Pendle Hill provides the stunning backdrop to this amazing outdoors experience.
Four artists have created immersive and interesting sculptures to merge art, nature and history to combine this super sculpture trail.
Taking inspiration from the Pendle Witch trials of 1612, their work is sympathetic to the surroundings and provides an ideal family day out.
Have a Pint at the Pendle Inn Barley
No visit to Pendle is complete without having a pint or two in the Pendle Inn Pub.
Mingle with the lovely locals and enjoy the comfortable, cosy country style surroundings.
Play some pool or simply people watch as you relax, kick back and watch the world go by.
Newchurch in Pendle
As you are now probably aware, Pendle has a witch theme to their local history and Neighbouring Newchurch in Pendle is not exception.
The next village on from Barley, Newchurch has the wonderful and wicker Witches Galore shop themed around witches and much more.
There is also St Mary’s church, a must see while in the area. The church tower is the only remaining part of the parish that dates back to 1544. The Oval window on the west side of the tower is allegedly the “eye of God”, but who knows whether this is fact or fiction.
Just to the right is the gravestone of Ellin nutter and family dated 1651, but no one knows if this could be the relative of Alice Nutter, so still shrouded in mystery.
Roughlee Village
Located near Pendle Hill is the lovely friendly, peaceful community village of Roughlee.
Here you will see the wonderful waterfall along with these super cool and fun stepping stones.
Also, look no further, as to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the infamous witch trials, the Alice Nutter statue, designed by David Palmer of DP Structures, has been erected in the village.
Convicted of alleged witchcraft, but yet Alice made only a statement of Not Guilty but she was still hanged along with nine others in the August of 1612 at Lancaster.
Stang Top Moor
For the keen hill walkers, hikers and trig bagger’s take in Stang Top Moor and enjoy the views from the triangulation point painted in their local football team colours!
Pendle a mystical, magical and magnificent part of the world. The surrounding areas have excitement, historic interest and are the perfect way to explore the great outdoors.
Meanwhile the Pendle Inn at Barley is the perfect place to rest, eat and drink while you make amazing memories and enjoy all these exciting adventures.
Thank you for reading 😊
