A UK Staycation with The Principal Hotel York #Review

A UK Staycation with The Principal Hotel York Review: September 2020 #Gifted

The Principal Hotel steeped in history and old school charm and character.

The gorgeous and glowing golden building emits the feeling of warmth and the welcome from Christopher was even warmer.

A lovely Scottish chap who clearly had a natural flare and passion for customer service and the buildings historical heritage.

Check in with the concierge with their cute royal red-letter box in pride of place.

Pass the rather lovely lounge, a perfect place to read the daily news, people watch and enjoy a refreshment once you have checked in.

Make your way up the iconic stunning sweeping staircase with mirrored details and neutral colouring.

The Principal York provide a range of accommodations from standard rooms to suites, we visited on two separate weekends to check out what both room types had to offer.

The Royal Suite

The Royal suite located on the first floor is a fabulous experience from the moment you walk through the door.

The spacious Suite has beautiful period detail and a tasty tuck box filled with a range of complimentary yummy treats.

This is the perfect time to enjoy some you time have a break have a kit kat along with a good Yorkshire cuppa.

Things get even more marvellous with the magnificent Minister view, a perfect viewing point, as you kick back and relax in the lovely lounge area.

Our wonderful welcome gift included a wicker basket along with a gorgeous golden box of chocolates such a lovely gesture.

Whether you’re off out for the evening or decide to dine in, the bathroom area, that included a separate room for the toilet, is the perfect pamper space.

With double person waterfall shower and complimentary elemis toiletries throughout your stay.

Highly recommend at least one evening of in-room dining, as the scene is set for a relaxed and romantic night in.

The suite is an exquisite experience perfect for romance, celebrations and provides plenty of space for a family stay.

Standard Rooms with a View

Room 211 was to be our home for the weekend and we could not wait to simply settle in and get all snug.

Our cosy double featured the classic red telephone and had an amazing light piece to boot.

The cute picnic wicker hamper, that was stuffed with sweet treats, included a beautiful illustrated York card and was a super surprise.

Safe, mini bar, bottled water and a tea tray all provided free of charge makes your stay much safer and easier, as no need to buy additional refreshments.

The beautiful bathroom was well appointed with a huge double stand up power shower. Along with complimentary Elemis toiletries for the duration of our weekend stay.

Whether you are staying in a suite or a standard room, I highly recommend ordering room service for 1 night of your stay, as it was easy and excellent all round.

Olives, salad, heritage tomato basil bruschetta and the chilled tomato and red pepper gazpacho tasted amazing.

Mains included the Rib Eye steak with Peppercorn Sauce and a range of lovely veggies such as greens and roasted carrots.

Cheesecake and brownie deserts washed down with non-alcoholic champs while enjoying the city wall view was a perfect ending to the evening.

The Refectory Restaurant

Dinner onsite is always a great idea, as it saves unnecessary travel and the Refectory restaurant is next level.

Catherine was top-notch really made sure our visit was spot on, a lovely member of the team personable, polite and professional.

The Refectory have a range of cocktails, mocktails, local beers perfect to sip as you enjoy some olives and peruse the menu.

The beautiful Berry Fizz made with fresh blackberries, apple, cranberry, elderflower, Vanilla syrup and lemonade is a refreshing treat.

The chef and his team are amazing, as catering for dietary needs can be done without faff or fuss.

Creating beautiful plates of food such as this pretty Quinoa Salad, Heritage tomato bruschetta and spicy chicken wings.

All washed down with a fabulous and fruity Virgin Blueberry Mojito made with a muddled mix of blueberries, mint, sugar syrup, apple and soda.

There is a good atmosphere and as early evening turns into later night the lights are dimmed and set a relaxed tone.

Mouth-watering mains such as the chickpea curry, fish and chips and the delicious chocolate brownie and frangipane desserts are all delicious.

The Garden Room

The gorgeous garden room is the perfect place to enjoy after dinner drinks or a lovely pot of fresh Yorkshire tea.

In the mornings it was nice to head to the onsite pool for a dip, a fresh and fantastic way to start the day.

Breakfast

Breakfast can be enjoyed in the Refectory or in the comfort of your own room or suite.

Consistent on both stays in terms of quality and a timely delivery on all mornings of our stay.

Hot bacon roll, avocado and chilli jam roll and a range of fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, tea, coffee and juice.

Make your York Staycation super with the Principal York.

  3. How beautiful this hotel is! I was in York many years ago. I spent quite a bit of time in North Yorkshire when I lived in London, but I can never get enough of York.

  7. The place looks so classic and elegant, but the interior design is so modern. I love this kind of vibe. It has some great facilities and food as well, Would love to visit there and have a nice “staycation” one day 🙂

  8. This is fantastic, we are having a nightmare booking our honeymoon getaway, we first booked the Netherlands but then it ended up on the list for 14c day self-isolation. This place looks great, I’ll have to research more.

  10. I was already sold on this place just based on the first few pictures! Then you sucked me in with the food. Lol. Ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce and cheesecake for dessert? I need to book a stay here like yesterday! It looks and sounds like the perfect escape without having to travel, yet completely comfortable and pampered. I need a staycation soon myself.
